ASTORIA, Ore. – The Columbia Pacific Building Trades
Council today unanimously passed a resolution supporting the Bradwood Landing
liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. In their resolution, the Council
cited the tremendous positive economic impact of Bradwood Landing, the
importance of available energy to support our growing economy and Bradwood
Landing’s commitment to partner with labor to create and support
living wage jobs.
“We support the Bradwood project because without it Oregon and
Washington will face a shortage of natural gas that will hurt many industries
in the region,” said Columbia Pacific Building Trades Executive
Secretary and Treasurer John Mohlis. “Pulp and paper, food processing
and wood product manufacturers all rely on a stable and affordable supply
of energy to run their plants and to keep people on the job.”
In addition, the Columbia Pacific Building Trades Council cited the
following reasons why it supports Bradwood Landing:
- A large portion of the Northwest’s current electricity
is supplied by coal-fired power plants outside of the Pacific Northwest.
The Council supports natural gas as a cleaner alternative
to help protect our environment from the harmful effects of pollutants
that damage our communities, streams and rivers;
- Bradwood Landing has committed to invest in the future
of the Lower Columbia area by working directly with Clatsop community
college to train and employ operations staff from the local community.
- Bradwood Landing has committed to ask for no tax breaks,
ensuring they will pay their fair share to support vital public services
such as schools and social and emergency services.
“We are very pleased to have the support and partnership of the building trades,“ said NorthernStar Natural Gas, Inc. CEO William ‘Si’ Garrett. “We will be calling on their skill and expertise to build Bradwood Landing.”
Mr. Garrett added, “construction of Bradwood Landing would create
hundreds of unionized construction jobs and more then $300 million in
payroll, full-time staff jobs, maintenance crews, dock workers, and
additional union jobs in the marine trades, all receiving living wages
and honest benefits.”
